Art in Action: Teachers and Parents in Action

Arrival

On Friday, April 3rd teachers, parents, and novice artists gathered at Cedarwoods Schoolhouse for a wonderful experience of exploring the arts. Students learned how the art curriculum could be integrated into History, Language Arts, Science and many other subjects. Students also had the opportunity to work with several art mediums such as: oil pastels, chalk pastels, paint, and pencil sketching.

Betsey

Betsey, from Art in Action was our wonderful instructor.  She brought along with her several samples of student art work.  Each of the curriculum pieces comes with an actual masterpiece which the students draw inspiration from.

You are invited to join us at our teacher and parent workshop through Art in Action.

Art in Action
Art in Action is a nonprofit organization dedicated since 1982 to bringing visual arts education to the classroom. The Art in Action program enriches the lives of thousands of students each year in public and private schools and after school programs through an engaging, hands-on curriculum that teaches art history, art appreciation, and art techniques. Through the training and support of educators, Art in Action seeks to make visual art an integral part of every student’s classroom experience.
Why Art?
Art is a visual language that speaks to students of all learning styles, providing them the opportunity to create, problem solve, and think critically - skills essential for success both in the classroom and beyond it. Art education engages children more fully in all aspects of learning and gives them a richer understanding of themselves and the world around them. Art encourages children to become curious, imaginative students and interested, thoughtful people.

Learning about Bees

The Kindergarten class has been learning about bees in the past month.  They painted a bee habitat and learned many interesting facts about bees, like the queen bee has four wings and worker bees collect pollen which helps us grow flowers and fruit.

Last week a bee keeper, Br. Khalid came by the school and talked about the many uses of things that bees produce and brought a live beehive.  It was so much fun!

Br. Khalid also brought local natural honey that he collected himself as well as some more honey products.  Please visit the school store to buy some.

Handarts with Mrs. Khadija

MashaAllah the students at Cedarwoods have been blessed with having Khala Khadija as their handarts teacher.  Khala Khadija is the founder of Barakah Life, a blog that has become a venue for artists, parents, and teachers who need a little help with creative ideas.

Khala Khadija has been an inspiration to us all for many years.  She is not only a teacher but she has worked in interior design, events design, stage design and much more.

Currently in addition to teaching Khala Khadija is coordinating a program called Creativity and the Spiritual Path which is a gathering of conversations towards promoting creativity.  We have event flyers in the office for those who are interested.

Khala Khadija is also organizing a second annual Sew Giving.  The purpose is to give a little warmth to children by supporting Project Night Night.  For more information please visit her blog at  http://barakahlifehandmade.typepad.com
